Moodle Administration
The Challenge:
The “Sample of Courses on LMS” is a snapshot of one of the 10 qualifications I manage. Success requires proactively managing requests to extend LMS functionality, including researching and testing plugins before deployment, while supporting a group of non-technical stakeholders.
The Solution:
I collaborate with stakeholders to identify additional LMS requirements, including:
- Completion Progress Bars: Progress bars visualize the required assessment tasks, for students. This allows students to track their progress, and trainers to see class progress and provide feedback – see “Progress Bar Video” example.
- Report a Problem in Moodle: I implemented a ticketing system for users to report any issues they encountered in the LMS – see “Sample Ticketing System”.
- Grade book customisation: A standard when working in the VET sector is to record a Competent / Not yet competent grade for each student in each unit. This was a complex problem when units had a variety of assessment types including quizzes of varying scores, observations with multiple criteria, case studies and projects. Additionally, units needed to be revised and updated without disruption to existing students. I was able to design a grade book system that was flexible and allowed new cohorts to commence at any time without disrupting existing and past student results, and delivered a competency-based grading scale.
- SQL Reports: To make student completion data easier to track, I commissioned a consultant to design SQL reports. I made these reports accessible within the Moodle environment and as downloadable data files.
The Tools:
- Feedback in Moodle
- Completion Progress plugin
- Attendance plugin
- Configurable reports plugin
